MEETINGS

MEMORIAL

Twice each week, Jehovah’s Witnesses hold meetings at their places of worship, called Kingdom Halls. New ones who come to our meetings who are orderly and not troublemakers may be called on for comments even if they are church members, are involved in nonneutral activities, are not properly married, or have not overcome the to-bacco habit.

Commenting at meetings is part of educational program; does not mean that  all who comment are part of the organization.  Newly interested ones may enroll on the program as long as they are living in harmony with Scriptural principles. If it is evident that a person’s conduct or views are in conflict with God’s principles such as using drugs or tobacco, leading an immoral life, and so forth, he does not qualify to be enrolled.—be 282; km 4/75 4.

MEMBERSHIP IN VARIOUS ORGANIZATIONS

Determine whether joining a particular organization could put a Witness in line for being disfellowshipped or would mean disassociating himself from the congregation.  Determining the nature of its activities as well as what membership would require.

Ask yourself these following questions:  ‘What are my rea-sons for wanting to become a member of this organization? Is it simply for edu-cational or business benefits that are not otherwise available? Or does it involve a desire for association with worldly peo-ple in a social way? What effect would membership in this organization have on my spirituality and on the time I have available for studying the Bible, at-tending meetings, sharing in field ser-vice, and caring for my responsibilities at home? If I become a member, what would I be called on to do? Are the char-tered purposes of the organization in harmony with Bible principles? Would others be stumbled or upset if I be-come a member of such an organiza-tion?’

MEMORIAL

The Lord’s Evening Meal was instituted by Jesus on the occasion of the Jewish Passover, and this occurred after sunset. So the Memorial celebration should occur after sundown. If the talk begins before sunset, the passing of the emblems should not occur until after sunset. It would be good for the local congregations to determine ahead of time when local sunset will be on the date of the Memorial observance that year.w93 2/1 31; w85 2/15 31; w77 6/15 383-4; w76 2/1 73-4; Matthew 26:17-30; Luke 22:7-23, 28-30; and 1 Corinthians 11:20-31; w03 3/15 31; w93 2/1 31; w85 2/15 31; w76 2/1 73-4; w76 2/1 76; w90 2/15 13-15; rs 269; w77 6/15 383-4; km 12/76 2-3; and w76 2/1 72-3.

NEUTRALITY AND EMPLOYMENT

Christians are no part of the world.  They do not take sides in its political affairs.  They do not interfere with what other people choose to do in this regard.John 17:16; Jas. 1:27; 4:4; 1 John 2:15.

Jesus set good examples for his followers by rejecting offers for political office.  Early Chris-tians avoided all political involvement.  If invited to express wishes regarding neighborhood improvements, there is no harm in doing so either in writing or by signing a petition, but when political means are used to obtain opinions, it is best to keep in mind principles found in God\’s word.Matt. 4:8-10; John 6:15; w99 11/1 28-9; w83 3/1 30-1; rs 269-76; g84 9/8 28; li 295-320.

A person carrying a political party membership card does not qualify to share in preaching from house-to-house or to be baptized.—w76 8/15 491; g72 12/8 20.

If to qualify for certain types of employment a person must be registered as eligible to vote, provided he does not indicate any political affiliation. This may simply be the community’s way of asking an individual to go on record as a citizen. The test of his Christian neutrality comes at the time of an election.w99 11/1 28-9; w64 5/15 308; w50 11/15 445-6.

In most coun-tries “Caesar” requires that parents send their children to school or arrange a certain amount of education for them.  Parents are responsible for deciding on the nature and extent of this secular education. (Prov. 6:20-22; Eph. 6:4; Mark 12:17; 2 Thess. 3:10-12; 1 Tim. 5:8; Titus 3:1; w92 11/1 17)

Parents are responsible to offset the bad influences that their children may experience while in school. (w76 9/1 522; w75 9/1 542-4; w70 8/1 479-80)

Responsible education can equip youths for shouldering adult responsibility, qualifying them for minimum employment—but more importantly, for Christian responsibilities. (w00 11/1 18-21; w96 2/1 9-14; w92 11/1 18-21; w82 7/15 12-13)

There are dangers that can under-mine the faith and morality of those who go to schools of higher education. In order to avoid these dangers, some choose to take supplementary education or training, such as a brief course at a trade school, in order to acquire needed job skills.—w84 10/1 17; w82 7/15 13-15; w05 10/1 26-31; w00 11/1 19; w96 2/1 14; g84 10/22 15.
