In passages like this is when the old Reference Bible is really helpful. The footnote in this verse after “in Egypt” says that the LXX adds “and Canaan”. Either that’s the original reading of the verse and it has been lost in the Hebrew text, or the translator realized what the actual meaning of that scripture was and added those words for clarity.
Those are good solutions. The English (and Spanish) text isn’t so audacious so this point is harder to see. Yet while other translations directly say here that the Israelites dwelled in Egypt 430 years, the NWT says that the Israelites dwelled (somewhere) 430 years, and that they dwelled in Egypt. That doesn’t necessarily mean that they spent those 430 years in Egypt, although that interpretation is the most natural one (and wrong). The Scandinavian word choice solves this problem better.
